Winter Wonder...Welcome!

It is official: yesterday was the last of our unseasonably warm weather fall days!

We have been spoiled with a beautiful and extra long, warmer fall. We have had sunny days, bright colored leaves, minimal gusts of wind and a most enjoyable drawn out summer. We have only had to get out our wintry gear once (maybe twice?) and it has been a lovely delay.

Yesterday we celebrated by playing outside (temperatures in the 60's), jumping in leaves, and talking about how fantastic we've had it (while looking at photos on social media of our dear Minnesota friends who received their first big snow storm), knowing these kinds of days would soon be over.

Last night we had a fierce storm (trees down in our neighborhood) and temperatures fell dramatically. This morning we woke up needing our slippers and cozy pullovers...it's not even noon yet, and we've already made hot chocolate, been on bike rides with gloves, and ran in circles around the snow flurries (just flurries).

I notice some folks complaining about and during wintertime, but I actually love it. I love the magic of the changing landscape (though I agree spring, summer, and fall are much more colorful) and wearing boots and sweaters (I do agree it's a bit taxing with children--all the boots, all the scarves, all the hats, all the gloves...but still). I enjoy watching the snowflakes swirl around and especially when there's enough of it to watch my children play in (and join them)! Last winter we made a sledding hill in our backyard that was *so much fun* for both kids & parents! It felt worth it to get out all the gear, even for 15 minutes of snow play.

I appreciate the grateful gatherings and love-warming energy of the holidays, and I am always excited about decorating our home (we start in November with our "Thankful Tree" and white lights). I bake more, we read out loud more, and our crafty times seem to double during the winter. Staying in, getting warm, and cultivating a coziness in our home creates a very different kind of vibe than the busy in-and-out of the warmer days.

Going out is fantastic too--finding the perfect sledding hill will be one of our priorities (we had the most amazing "sledding bowl" just down the road from our Minnesota home, and we went regularly). At the beginning of this year I even took a walk every single day--no matter the negative wind chills or snow piles--and it was extremely liberating...even inspiring. I started noticing the wintry details that are otherwise easily  ignored...like that you can see every single nest in the trees because the leaves are gone, the various animal footprints in the snow, and the way the light posts take on an otherworldly glow in the misty-fog of a winter morning.

I read this article about some words we don't have in the English language--but that encourage an embracing and settling into the winter experience, from our Norwegian friends...I found it absolutely on target with some of my winter-love feelings.

"taking the time to slow down and savor all those things that lead to a sense of contentment, coziness and community building.  Americans have ways to go when it comes to mastering the art of “savoring,” but when we can figure it out and teach our children to practice it as well, I think we’ll be onto something. "

Another article that discusses the Norwegian secret to enjoying winter--which also talks about the concept of coziness, enjoying, and celebrating the season instead of dreading and complaining about it-- and suggests at the end: "You can just consciously try to have a positive wintertime mindset and that might be enough to induce it."

We put up our white lights a week ago.
I absolutely adore the soft, inviting glow, especially to brighten the dull skies that I know lie ahead.

What will you do
to lighten your mind and home
during the darker days of winter?

Friday

Bubble Gum, Snickers, and Baskin Robbins

"Mom, Dad! Look--I have another loose tooth!"

An exclamation made earlier this week during dinner by Mr. J (8) Two out of our four children are regularly either wiggling newly loose teeth, sporting open gaps, or growing in their adult teeth. They have embraced the mythology and lore of the tooth fairy and have decided the best way for them to make some quick change is to lose a tooth!

In fact, a week or two ago, Mr. N (5) said "I wish I could lose ALL OF MY TEETH right NOW so I could get so much gold coins!"

He was so serious about it, too--it was hilarious.

I suppose I got into the excitement of losing teeth and gaining something from the tooth fairy--but that surely was NOT the case for my very first loose tooth.

The experience is one of my core childhood memories--I can remember so many details about it, it is fascinating to recall.

I was five years old, and we were at my maternal grandparents' home in Columbia, Tennessee. My tooth was pretty loose but I wanted to ignore it--the imagined pain was just too much for me. My Mom was not squeamish at ALL about it. In fact, she tried every thing she could to get me to let her snap it out. I remember her trying (so patiently!) to convince me; I was laying on my grandmother's tall bed and I just could not imagine that saying yes would yield anything positive for me.

So I never pulled that baby tooth* and still have it today.

...

...

...

JUST KIDDING.

But really, that's how stubborn I was feeling.

In the end, there were some guys (teenagers? young adults?) who were at my grandfathers farm that day doing some work for him. They must have heard the ruckus and felt obliged to lend a helping hand. They each offered me something...if I would pull my teeth.

One offered bubble gum (tempting, it was not something we had on a regular basis).

Another offered any candy bar of my choice (Snickers, please?)

And then I was offered Baskin Robbins ice cream ...and a few dollars to seal the deal.

I couldn't believe it--bubble gum, ice cream, AND a candy bar!! AND some dollar bills!?

My Mom quickly snapped that little pearl in a second and I was convinced that I had won the tooth pulling lottery.

And those guys were the best "tooth fairy" ever.

*Strangely enough, I actually DO have two baby teeth in my set of chompers. Apparently, if you don't have an adult tooth underneath/above--then it won't ever get loose, but you'll have it indefinitely. Such is the case with my two bottom baby teeth (congenitally missing teeth is an inherited trait). It's one of my several dental quirks.

Thursday

Thankful Thursday: November 17, 2016

What an incredible gift this fall season has been--besides a handful of chilly days, we've had extended summer-fall weather--complete with sunshine, slight breezes, and fantastic temperatures.

We've only had to wear coats a few times--and we keep saying "this will be one of the last warm days" to coax the kids to spend more time outside--and they keep saying "you keep saying that!"

But.
It's true!

This week looks like it might be the last warmer week--for reals though. A front is coming through and Sunday will probably require coats and we might even get a dusting of snow! We're excited about the shifting seasons, but man oh man--I am just so thankful for such a slow moving autumn time.

In addition...I'm Thankful For:

-fried pickles (a current favorite craving)
-coupons
-new (super soft & comfortable) jogging pants (that I am wearing constantly)
-baby gown sleepers
-dictionaries (and the fun we are having with them in homeschool lately)
-washable markers (now more than ever before--Miss A likes to "make her mark")
-our thankful tree, filling out so nicely
-low key holidays
-chats with my Mom
-our backyard
-crunchy leaves
-Mr. H's vacation time
-freshly vacuumed carpets
-hot showers
-organized spaces
-long pillows
-coconut oil
-my hormone-influenced dryer and thicker hair
-fresh mint (still blooming! and my roses too!)
-my 18 month old's hugs, kisses, and snuggles
-my almost-5-year-olds compliments and back massages
-my 6 year old's morning cuddles
-my 8 year old's inquisitive evening chats
-family game time--we're into UNO these days
-brooms!
-my visiting teacher reaching out to me and watching my kids for a bit this week
-slow moving mornings
-pancake dinners
-thank you notes from my Mr.
-packages in the mail
-ice packs for aching shoulders, head bumps, and forehead bruises
-foggy mornings and nowhere to go
-my kids' good choices & positive behaviors
-patience when my kids don't make good choices or choose positive behaviors
-forgiveness for when I don't have patience when my kids don't make good choices or choose positive behaviors
-good quality sleep
-sweet potato chips
-read aloud time
-quiet reading time
-our local libraries
-family "date night" (Buffalo Wild Wings with coupons this week!)
-travel plans (that may or may not happen...but it's fun to imagine!)
-comfortable couches (they might be looking worn, but they're still so comfortable!)
-comfort from God
-my eternal family

That's all for now...more next Thursday!

My First Doula

I first heard about doulas when I was doing research on birth and birth support in 2008--as I was preparing for my first labor and birth. I don't think I would have been reading and researching anything that suggested a focus on options in birth at all, had in not been for my medical history.

Three years before, I was diagnosed with a rare blood disease--one that could have killed me, but thanks to quick acting practitioners and medication, didn't. It did leave me with many lessons learned in a short amount of time and new information about how my body works--including the fact that *if* my blood platelets happened to dip too low during pregnancy, that I would not be a good candidate for an epidural.

I had only ever imagined myself having the maximum amount of pain relief available--since I was a card carrying member of the Ultimate Wimp club and could not fathom enduring the intensity of labor without the assistance of modern medicine. As I was wrapping my brain around the fact that it was TOTALLY POSSIBLE that I would even have the OPTION of an epidural, I decided I needed to learn what the other options were.

I read up on birthing philosophies, methods, and alternatives to medical interventions. It was in this search that I realized that throughout history (until fairly recently), women have relied on other women for emotional, physical, & mental support during birth.

I learned that a doula is a support person for the birthing mother (and spouse/partner), whose support can have an incredible impact on birth outcomes. In addition, many mothers--especially those choosing to avoid medical pain relief--found their doulas to be a priceless addition to their support team and their natural birthing plans.

I made some calls and did some internet searches--and found the ONE DOULA within a TWO HOUR radius of where we were living (small town Kentucky). The local hospital's lactation consultant also recommended her and I was excited to find out that she was also a massage therapist. Perfect.

I contacted her and made an appointment to interview her. At our in-home visit, I asked all kinds of questions from my pre-printed list (I had found lists online of questions you should ask a potential doula) and she made a few comments on how much she liked our "aura" and "energy" (Trevor still jokes about this, 8 years later).

My list-making personality and her hippy vibes meshed and we hired her to be our doula. In the end, because my water broke before active labor and a host of other reasons (that I now know much more about, and would argue), I ended up having a c-section.

My doula was at the hospital with us for 24 hours, and even though I didn't birth as I had hoped/imagined...she was an empowering force for me, as she was the only one with me during the final minutes of prep and the first minutes after the surgery. She was also the only one who took the time to explain to me what exactly it would be like and send me off to the operating room with quiet affirmations of hope and courage.

Bonus: I had the most luxurious prenatal and postnatal massages that were part of her birth doula package. Dreamy.

Monday

Monday Morning Quote: Gratitude

"Gratitude is a Spirit-filled principle.
It opens our minds to a universe
permeated with the richness of a living God.

Through it, we become spiritually aware
of the wonder of the smallest things,
 which gladden our hearts
with their messages of God’s love.

This grateful awareness
heightens our sensitivity to divine direction.
When we communicate gratitude,
we can be filled with the Spirit
and connected to those around us
and the Lord."

Sister Bonnie D. Parkin

This has been one of my favorites and is displayed
on our "thankful tree"!

I Invite You To Think Abundantly

"I invite you ... to think abundantly. I love the word 'abundant'; it has lots of soft sound and seems to go along with this season of the year, the harvest and gathering in. Thinking abundantly means knowing that there is more than enough for everyone. Abundant thinking is full of gratitude for what you have and delight in what others have."

~Virginia H. Pearce

One of my most favorite joys of November is a general increase in the focus on gratitude (and I can't believe we're almost halfway through this month already: WHAT! Oops. I'm so grateful to already be almost halfway through this month...right? right.)

Check out this fascinating article about the power of GRATITUDE in all areas of our lives...health, career, relationships, etc...it actually lists 31 points.

Apparently, it's a big deal and it can dramatically increase our happiness on a variety of levels and circles in which we invest our time and energy. Um. Who doesn't need that?

Let's keep up the gratitude vibe
even after November

Go read that article & then tell me which part was the most surprising/fascinating/inspiring to you--!

Saturday

Hobbies

We moved this summer, in case you didn't know. It was our first move in several years (but our 6th move overall), and the circumstances were quite a bit different-- so it felt more awkward and challenging in many ways.

One of the awkward elements (but so important for someone who thrives on connections with others) is getting to know people in your new community. Or rather, various communities...there's the neighborhood, any local classes/groups your kids join, your work community, for us--homeschooling community--, etc. The easiest community to find new friends, for me, is our church community.

It has been my experience that there is somewhat of an automatic connection through same beliefs and spiritual goals--which is fantastic--and can be experienced anywhere you move! Most especially within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) ...it's like having an extended "family" anywhere you roam. The weekly schedule is the same, the lessons are the same, the doctrine is the same, and the warmth and welcoming--it maybe shown in different ways but--it is the same. What a sweet relief that is!

Still, there is awkwardness in getting to know new people and self sharing. A few weeks after we moved in, I remember sitting on a towel on a private beach with some other mothers (from our church) while our children played in the sand a few feet away from us. Everyone was having their own conversations and every once and awhile someone would ask me something about ME--so they could get to know me better.

Now, many people like to be asked questions about themselves. Some don't. Some prefer those kinds of interactions to be more one-on-one. For me, I usually fare ok either way...but that afternoon, I was asked a question that always leaves me stumped and wondering how I can change my life to have a better answer.

"So, what are your hobbies?"

*blank stare*

*blink blink*

*look down to see if baby needs anything so I can skip by this one*

*blink blink*

Ummmm...well? I like to...

My mind is racing now. What do I like to do? I like to have a clean kitchen, I like to take naps, I like to read about how to be a better mother and wife, I like to see my friends photos on instagram...? Those aren't hobbies, what kind of a boring person am I--WHAT ARE MY HOBBIES!!!???--

I start thinking of other people's hobbies...my sister-in-law has amazing quilting skills, my

I think of typical answers people might give to the question-- "I like to run/bike/race/workout/dance/play such-and-such sports..." My feeling of panic increases as I remember I obviously canNOT say anything in the physical exertion categories...sure, I'll run a 5k with you but mostly I'll walk and then I'll be done for awhile. And dance? I do, but just for family dance parties...in which my 4 year old out-rhythms me with ease.

Ok what else, what else--sewing? No. Crafting? Well I enjoy creating things but I mean...what was the last thing I did? Traveling? Well yes--but--I mean, last big trip was...? Writing? Having bangs?

Should I say I enjoy photography, talking about birthy-breastfeeding things, and baking?

I mean...really.
I do enjoy photography (but haven't done anything with my "nice cameras in months & months), I'm all about the birthy world but is that a hobby that makes sense to anyone not in it?...and...what do I say if I'm asked what my favorite thing to bake is--? Uhhh 5 minute artisan bread?

Point is.
What.
I don't know. I don't have a hot list of trendy or cool hobbies. And mostly I'm ok with that. But when someone asks...all of the sudden I'm not, and then I stumble over it for a few days trying to figure out how to become more impressive than I am, but closer to the impressive that I think I am.

And what does that even mean?

In the end.

Hobbies?
Yeah, I like to figure out how to maximize my time between raising 4 kids, organizing my house, being a good wife, and finding ways to do it all with a calm heart...as long as I can also get a nap in there every once and awhile.

What are your hobbies?

Friday

Another Getting To Know You List...because, Friday

1. What is your middle name?: Lea. There is a Swedish phrase that sounds like my first and middle names together, but also, one of my mother's favorite friends was Lea (which I recently found out was short for Azalea, which is one of my favorite would-be baby girl names!)
2. What was favorite subject at school?: English, for sure--I love learning to write well and reading thought provoking, inspiring books. (I also loved drama, Latin, Spanish, and history)
3. What is your favorite drink?: I have been drinking lemon-honey tea every morning these days to start off the chilly  mornings--so good. Mostly I love water. And lemonade in the summer!
4. What is your favorite song at the moment?: I don’t have a favorite song, but I'm one of those people who get an early start on Christmas music...yes I am. :)
5. What is your favorite food?: I love all.good.food. And it really depends on my mood. Today is windy cool--perfect for soup (my red lentils are soaking as I type)
6. What is the last thing you bought?: The last thing I bought was a set of baby gown sleepers--I'm trying to build up my cozy baby collection, (since I gave away most of our new baby boy clothes a couple of years ago)...almost 3 weeks to go!
7. Favorite book of all time?: Oh man. That's a hard one. I think I'm going to have to say Les Miserables.
8. First car?: My first car was a little red Dodge something...two door, hatch back, I loved it.
9. Do you have any pets?: We are currently pet-less. Pre-kids we had a deaf, white, grouchy cat named Marshmallow. I don't know that we'll ever have an indoor pet like that again...just fish.
10. Favorite Perfume?: I stopped wearing perfume a few years ago...these days I just dab a blend of oils and call it good.
11. Favorite Holiday?: All holidays have some magic, nostalgia, and fun to them, right? Thanksgiving and Christmas are my favorites.
12. Are you married?: YES! We hit 12 years in August. Which seems so...wild. And awesome. And wild.
13. Have you ever been out of the country, if so how many times?: I have been to Mexico (when I was 9) and Canada (when I was 20, then recently with the family), and I lived in Portugal (2002-2004) where I also temporarily touched down in both Spain, France, & Germany, then returned to Portugal (2008) with my husband. We are hoping to travel internationally again before too long!
14. Do you speak any other language?: Obviously, I am fluent in English. I am also fluent in Portuguese, and was once fluent in Spanish--I can still read it and understand it--but when I try to speak it, it comes out Portu-Spanish, which is just silly. I am pretty sure I can solve that problem with some study and work.
15. How many siblings do you have?: I have 3 younger brothers, who I think are just amazing, brilliant, incredible people.
16. What is your favorite shop?: Hmmm...it depends on what I'm looking for, right? And I do so much online shopping now. So. What. Amazon? lol
17. Favorite restaurant?: My favorite restaurant is in Minnesota and called Axel's Bonfire. I'm sure I'll find a favorite in Michigan, but we haven't been out enough to find it yet!
18. When was the last time you cried?: Earlier today. You know, as a parent, there are all kinds of reasons to worry and wonder about your children's challenges and successes. Worry never helps, but sometimes crying gets it out.
19. Favorite Blog?: I used to keep up with this blog, my family blog, and follow SO MANY BLOGS. Now I really don't.
20. Favorite Movie?: I'm not much of a movie person...but I really loved the newest Cinderella.
21. Favorite TV shows?: I don't watch TONS of TV either (we don't have cable or local TV, anyway), but my most recent likings: Sherlock, Call the Midwife, Poldark, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Chicago Med, & Home Fires
22. PC or Mac?: Mac
23. What phone do you have?: Samsung Galaxy S7
24. How tall are you?: 5’3 1/2″
25. Can you cook?: Yes, I can cook...but I usually prefer baking.

Wednesday

Stand Up, Be Kind, & Show Love

Love swallows hate,
heals wounds,
& soothes griefs.

•••

How we feel is real--honor it,
give it place,
take it to a quiet, thoughtful space...
then, let's stand up.

•••

Let's stand up with courage, kindness,
grace, hope, & love.

Let's stand up and fortify our homes & communities with truth
and the powerful safety of compassion.

Let's stand up in respect
for the goodness in each other.

Let's stand up & link arms
with those too weary or too worried to stand.

Let's stand up to fight our daily battles--
side by side.

Let's stand up to prove that
we are greater than we think we are,
and far better than we might feel
at this moment.

Let's stand up strong,
ready for whatever tides may come,
holding tight to the power that hope releases--when we choose love.

*My thoughts on a particularly intense post-election Wednesday*

Monday

Monday Morning Quote: Comparing

"...we must stop comparing ourselves to others.

We torture ourselves needlessly by competing and comparing.
We falsely judge our self-worth by the things we do
or don’t have
and by the opinions of others.

If we must compare,
let us compare how we were in the past
to how we are today—and even to how we want to be in the future.

The only opinion of us that matters is what our Heavenly Father thinks of us."

~J Devn Cornish

Sunday

We Do It All For The Samples

Our (loud) dishwasher is a'swishing,
the kids are finally done with all the bedtime requests
(I need to tell you something...I need some more water...I need to go to the bathroom again...)
and Mr. H is catching up with his mother (and they love to get riled up over politics).

I scoot back in the chair at the round white table and I think about the day--from the morning rushing around (and curling Miss N's hair), to the busy-ness of the Church day (and Miss A refusing to go to nursery--what!?), to the afternoon getting home rush (and Mr N's gleefully choosing our late lunch eats), to the evening walk (and Mr J's creative observations of the shapes of the fall tinted trees), to the dinner chatter (and Mr. H's jokes that keeps everyone in giggles).

And I feel so tired.
And I feel so grateful for the little moments.

Figuring out the balance and dance of getting through the daily ev.ery.thing. feels like one big, special, ridiculously exhausting event--peppered with the most savory tasty morsels. Like the samples at Costco.

Which we all love the most.
Right?

So we'll go to bed feeling worn out from all of it...and we'll do it again in the morning, from the morning rush to the bedtime blusters. Because, those tasty morsels of sweet connecting with the ones we cherish the most--they are always worth it.

Saturday

When It's The First Saturday of the Month

This morning Trevor woke the boys up at 8:30 am. They jumped up, got dressed at lightening speed and headed down the stairs (Miss N was invited but decided some extra ZZzzs were in order), and were ready before Trevor finished getting dressed.

The first Saturday of every month, Home Depot hosts a kids workshop. We discovered the event when we lived in Minnesota (and HD was only 5 minutes away, which was dreamy--but that was then and this is now, right? right. *grumbles about having to drive 15-20 minutes to get most places*) and it has been such a fun memory making event for Daddy & the kids (obviously any parent/caretaker can take the kids and I have been at least once before but it's been a fun thing for him to do just with them).

The kids get special bright orange aprons, they put their names on them, and at EVERY workshop, they 1) build something, and 2) get a pin that tells what they made to add to their project aprons. The event is free, and pretty much the best thing ever for the kids, and despite the many hammers going at once & the paint sloshing all around--Trevor takes advantage of the opportunity to strengthen his relationship with his little builders.

Miss N finally escaped the coziness of her bed and climbed into mine. She cuddled up on Dad's pillow and soon we heard the chirps of our littlest bird, Miss A. She joined us with her charming smile and we all giggled and snuggled under the white blankets.

By the time the apron-toting brothers got home, the sisters & I were busy in the kitchen (should have worn aprons) making pancakes for all of us to enjoy a tasty brunch. The Home Depot crew were so excited to show us their craft and even brought home supplies for Miss N to build her very own helicopter--brilliant. With our forks full of pancakes and helicopters to admire, it was the perfect start to this sunny Saturday.
